Planning a move can be exciting. However, the act of executing that move can be much less enjoyable — unless you have an arsenal of moving tips from the pros.

Often, packing is one of the most dreaded parts of moving because it can be tedious and time-consuming. A poor pack job can also damage your possessions, and that added level of pressure doesn’t make this task more fun.

Fortunately, professional movers have been perfecting the art of packing for decades. Here, we’ve included the hacks they use to ensure a client’s items are packed efficiently and safely. Follow these tips, and you can pack like a professional for your next move.

Declutter

Decluttering is something you should do before you begin packing. This means getting rid of clothing you no longer wear, kitchen appliances you never use, old pantry items and more. Don’t take any items into your new home that you don’t use in your current one (sentimental items excluded).

Prepare With the Proper Packing Supplies

Professional movers constantly emphasize the importance of preparation. This includes stocking the necessary packing supplies. The following are items you’ll want to have before you begin the packing process:

  • Multiple sizes of boxes, mostly medium and large
  • Packing paper (true packing paper is superior to old newspapers and magazines)
  • Thick markers for labeling
  • Clear plastic bags for small items
  • Packaging tape

Experts explain that purchasing quality boxes, packing paper and packaging tape can make a packing job easier and more organized.

Create a Packing Space

Designate a specific area or room in your home for packing. Keep all your packing supplies here and do the packing in this area. The space should be just for packing and not for storing packed boxes. Remove packed boxes to another area once complete.

One Room at a Time

It’s also because the kitchen is usually full of cumbersome, awkwardly shaped or perishable items. There are appliances, pantries, junk drawers, fragile items and much more.

To help tackle this room, wrap your plates, bowls and other dishes individually, then wrap additional paper around them as a bundle. Dishes stored on their sides in boxes are less prone to breakage than those stacked upright.

Experts recommend wrapping all stemware and glasses individually, then placing them at the top of your kitchen boxes. Clearly mark all boxes with dishes and stemware inside as “fragile.”

Watch the Weight

An often-forgotten pro tip is to control the weight of your boxes. Professionals suggest keeping every box below a weight limit of 50 pounds. Boxes over this weight are more difficult to move, and the bottom of the box is more likely to give.

Load Boxes in Order of Use

Load the boxes you’ll open later into your moving vehicle first. Load the most used boxes — such as kitchen essentials and toiletries — last. This will give you easier access to more important items.

Additional Tips

Some items may require special packing techniques. The following are some final tips from the pros:

  • Pack electronics in their original packaging, when possible. This also means keeping the original packaging if you buy new electronics for your new home.
  • Many large furniture items are easier to move if disassembled.
  • Leave light clothing in dresser drawers, then wrap the dresser in stretch wrap, so the doors don’t open.
  • Pack other clothing on hangers in wardrobe boxes.

Packing and unpacking don’t always have to be dreaded tasks. Remember that the above steps can be made more fun by inviting friends, cranking up the speaker, ordering takeout and tackling the task together.
